With speculation on the summer transfer rumour mill having already linked us with an interest once again in Southampton Academy graduate Matt Targett, as the week came to a close it looked like there might be a few developments in Aston Villa’s reported chase of him.
Despite Claims, Villa Won’t Be Launching A Double Raid On Southampton
The 23-year-old left back is highly rated by Southampton and with him impressing during his spell with Fulham in 2017/18 his future has long been in doubt owing to his game time on the south coast and Villa have been linked with him for the last few transfer windows.
On Friday, Sky Sports were claiming that talks were now being held between both clubs over a potential sale as Targett had apparently made it clear he wanted to move on this summer.
Whether it’s a case of the tail wagging the dog and the rumour mill simply feeding itself or not, reported confidence of the likelihood of this deal coming off for us this summer did seem to be rising as the day progressed.
#AVFC slapped in a bid for Southampton's Matt Targett. See @MirrorFootball 's live blog https://t.co/w3hhvN9JUl IMO good chance of this deal getting done as Targett wants to go & Saints promised to reassess his future this summer when refused to sell him 1 yr ago to Fulham

I certainly wouldn’t be against it.
Update – reports on Sunday were stating announcement imminent on a £14million deal rising to £17million.
Southampton and Aston Villa have agreed a £14m fee for Matt Targett, rising to £17m including add-ons. Expect the deal for the left-back to go through this weekend. Good business for Saints; solid long term investment for AVFC
